Let the Game Begin

drawing books

One of my goals for this year is to learn to draw. I’ve been always admiring people who are able to change a paper (even a napkin) into a piece of art once they hold a pen. People like Anna Denise, Gennine or Bianca. I’ve always thought that I just can’t draw and that I simply never will. But then I read somewhere, that people can learn how to draw, that drawing is more of a skill than a talent, and that almost anyone can learn how to draw amazing images. So this year, I decided to finally give it a try.

I ordered a couple of books that could, hopefully, help me get closer to accomplishing this goal. 642 Things to Draw is more of a source of inspiration combined with a sketchbook than a book as such. It is full of drawing ideas, both concrete and abstract, ones that seem to be easy-peasy and ones that I can hardly imagine, let alone draw. You Can Draw in 30 Days, on the other hand, is a text-book, which might sound kind of boring, but the reviews I read about it say that it’s not a regular ‘how-to’ book that tries to look clever, but that it’s written in an easy-to-understand way and what more, that it’s funny. It promises to teach me (and anyone else) how to draw in only 30 days, if I’m willing to dedicate it only 20 minutes a day. Well, we will see, and hopefully my excitement won’t drop.

Meanwhile, I’m dreaming that one day my sketchbook will look like one of these or at least that my pictures won’t look like drawn by a 3-year old anymore. Keep your fingers crossed for me!

I relate to you in thoughts like “I wish I could draw like this …”, but since my litlle niece is forcing me to draw more I realize I’m getting better each time. Being convinced in “…I never could” is mostly just an excuse for not practicing, therefore I wish you lots of motivation, determination and practice ;)

Happy drawing Mirka! I’ve seen some great drawing books around – I’d love to check some out. I have found that sketching with help from books can be great. I’m doing a drawing subject this semester which is drawing the body and I’m nervous about realistic drawing!

What a great idea! I’ve always wanted to draw and bought a fashion illustration book to get into the technical aspects of it, but never looked at it. You’ve inspired me to take another look! :)
